- THE KANSAS CITY QUILT COMPANY Presently the Kansas City Quilt Company is open for business Friday afternoons and all day Saturdays offering a wide selection of fabric and ready-made quilts of all sizes. Just in are crochet needles and threads. Custom long-arm quilting orders may also be made. The next facebook live BLOCK OF THE MONTH class is Saturday, April 30, beginning at 2:00 pm at Village Lines and will continue monthly the last Saturday of each month. * * * * * THE DAY PRETTY BOY FLOYD STOPPED BY FOR A SHAVE
I always thought our building's claim to fame, which was apparently not a contributing factor, was that Pretty Boy Floyd had a shave here. Highway 18 originally came right through on main street in Lincoln and was the half way point between Kansas City and Denver, a convenient meeting place for travelers, especially out-laws from the two cities who hung around Central Kansas in the 1920 -1930 era. One afternoon a car that wasn't local pulled up and parked in front of what was then a barber shop in the front of our building. Two men and two women were inside. One gentleman exited to walk around to the ally behind our building, the other entered the barber shop but didn't say a word, he just pointed to the barber chair overlooking the street and his car. He refused being tilted back or having a towel over his face. After the shave, he left a large tip. That confirmed the barber's suspicion that he was Pretty Boy Floyd. Leaving large tips was a trademark of Floyd. One of the four barbers was Fritz Bosch, who later owned the building and barbered 46 years here. He told his family around the table that night about their unexpected customer. I never knew Fritz but years later when I began Village Lines in the building, his family became frequent visitors of mine and liked to talk about their growing up in the barber shop/pool hall. I now know where the pool table and spittoon were, where the common sink used by the four barbers was, I know the cupboard where the candy for sale was stored, and of course about the day that Pretty Boy Floyd entered my building and had a shave!
